Supreme Court seeks response from Karnataka High Court over Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda’s remarks

The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the Registrar General of the Karnataka High Court over social media clips about comments allegedly made by Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda, during the course of hearing cases.

The five-judge Bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrahud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice BR Gavai, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Hrishikesh Roy observed that the attention of the court has been drawn to media reports pertaining to certain comments made by Karnataka High Court judge, Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda, during the contract of judicial proceedings.

Taking suo motu cognisance of the matter, the Apex Court directed the Registrar General of the High Court of Karnataka to submit a report within two days to the Secretary General of this Court after seeking administrative directions of the Chief Justice in regard to the subject matter being referred to.

The Bench requested Attorney General R Benkataramani and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to assist the court in the matter.

Noting the prominence of social media on court proceedings, the Apex Court mulled over laying down guidelines in the course of hearings and listed the matter for further hearing on September 26.

Some clips of Justice Srishananda making the comment during a hearing went viral on social media.
