Supreme Court directs lawyers not to seek adjournment till December 15

The Supreme Court Registry on Tuesday issued a circular, directing the lawyers not to seek adjournments in advance by circulating letters till December 15, 2023.

The circular said that in order to accommodate the request of listing maximum number of cases in the interest of litigants and in view of the ensuing winter vacation, all stakeholders to note that the practice of circulating adjournment slips/letters is discontinued with immediate effect till December 15.

It said in case of any genuine difficulty, a request for adjournment can be made before the Court concerned.

The Apex Court will close for winter vacations on December 15.

Earlier, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud had expressed anguish at the practice of lawyers circulating adjournment letters in the very same matters, which were listed after urgent mentioning.

Today also, after the hearing of a Constitution Bench case, the CJI said that 205 adjournment slips were given yesterday.
