Supreme Court Collegium recommends appointment of five additional judges as permanent judges in Calcutta High Court

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended appointment of five additional judges of the Calcutta High Court as permanent judges.

The Court has also extended the tenure of one additional judge by one year.

As per the recommendation, four of the five judges will be made permanent and will continue to remain in the Calcutta High Court.t

Justice Lapita Banerji of Calcutta High has however been snd to the Punjab & Haryana High Court.

The Supreme Court Collegium comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud along with Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice BR Gavai gave recommendation for the following judges for permanent appointment: 

– Justice Ananya Bandyopadhyay

– Justice Rai Chattopadhyay 

– Justice Shampa Dutt (Paul)

– Justice Raja Basu Chowdhury

– Justice Lapita Banerji

Four of these five judges are women.

On July 2023,the Collegium had deferred the proposals received from the Calcutta High Court Collegium for permanent appointment of the six additional judges as permanent judges of the High Court.

The proposal for permanent appointment of Justice Subhendu Samanta was also recommended,however this time also he has been disappointed.

The Collegium said in the latest resolution.Shri Justice Subhendu Samanta be appointed as an Additional Judge for a fresh term of one year with effect from 18 May 2024.
