Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of Calcutta High Court hints at quitting, may join politics

Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of the Calcutta High Court has revealed his plans of resigning from his post as a judge on March 5.

Speaking to a local news outlet, Justice Gangopadhyay thanked the ruling dispensation of the Trinamool Congress for repeatedly challenging him to enter the political arena, stating that the journey would begin on Tuesday.

He further said that he has not made any decisions regarding his political affiliations, or contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, and was open to joining either the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Indian National Congress (INC), or the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

He further said he wanted to enter the political arena and work towards the betterment of people at the grassroots level, in furtherance of his work as a judge of the High Court.

Justice Gangopadhyay was due to retire in August 2024.
