Delhi LG approves creation of 10 more family courts to clear pendency

Taking in view the long pendency of cases in the existing 21 family courts of Delhi, Lieutenant General Vinai Kumar Saxena on Tuesday gave his nod to creation of 10 more family courts, taking their total strength to 31.

As per a statement issued by the LG’s office, the proposal, which was first moved in October, 2019, would help in adjudicating cases, some of which have remained pending for more than a decade.

The approval effects creation of posts of 10 Judges to head these Courts and also 71 other posts that include Reader, Steno/ Sr. PA, Steno/ PA, Ahlmad/ JA, Assistant Ahlmad, Naib Nazir, Orderly and Staff Car Driver.

About 46,000 cases are pending in Family Courts in Delhi, lowest being
1321 pending with Principal Judge, Family Court, Saket and highest
being 3654 pending with Family Court, Rohini.

According to Family Court HQ, Dwarka, there are about 150-200 on the average being registered with Family Courts on a daily basis and approximately 80 percent staff in these Courts is working on diverted capacity from various other Departments.
