CJI Chandrachud turns vegan on daughter’s request

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Monday said that he recently turned vegan after his daughter told him to lead a cruelty-free life.

Speaking at the launch of the Digital Law Reports of the Delhi High Court, the CJI said that he and his wife have stopped purchasing leather or silk products.

As per CJI Chandrachud, his specially-abled daughters always inspired him in doing the right thing.

The CJI also inaugurated an outlet of Sagar Ratna restaurant in the High Court campus, which would be run by neuro-diverse people.

Speakimg about differently-abled people, he said that he came in contact with such people daily, and was amazed to see the tremendous potential they possessed.

An outlet being run by specially-abled persons, in this case neuro-diverse persons, could no more be called a one-off venture. This was turning into a movement. When Mitti Cafe was set up in the Supreme Court premises, it was appreciated wholeheartedly by everyone, including the judges, lawyers and the staff alike, recalled the CJI.

On November 10, 2023, CJI Chandrachud inaugurated the Mitti Cafe, an establishment run entirely by differently-abled people, in the Supreme Court premises.

Calling it a step towards promoting inclusivity, the CJI urged the members of the bar to support the initiative.

He said ‘Mitti Cafe’ has opened 38 outlets in different parts of the country and served six million meals during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Attorney General R Venkataramani praised the initiative, calling it a symbol of great compassion.
